Test footage
The effect used in this video is tilt shift. It is something that I would like to use because through this process the world looks like a model and not the real world that it is. In fact the effect looks so real that when my fellow students viewed it they thought that it was a model. It took a lot of explaining to make them believe that this was real.
Below I have experimented.

Alex Day
Alex Day is an English Indie music artist who is a YouTube
celebrity. He currently lives in London with his house mate Charlie McDonnell
who is one of the first YouTube celebrities. I believe that he is reliable the
only problem is he is the only artist/band that I know, and I do not even know
him personally. He has a Twitter account and a website so we will have to see
what happens.
Here is an email that I have sent him:
Hello. I understand that the subject title of this email is
vague so I'll explain myself. My name is Roan Darcy Fryer and I am currently
studying A level film and media studies at City College Norwich. There is a
unit in the media A level which requires me to make a music video and I would
like you to star in it.
Now I am sure that you have a lot of questions and I will
answer them to the best of my ability. Here are a few I thought up:
"Which Norwich?
How far away is that?" City College Norwich is based in the Norfolk
city of Norwich, England. It is accessible by train from London with about a
three hour ride time.
"How and what am
I being paid?" That is the problem, I can't pay you. It is OK however
as I have planned for a no from you to being in this video because I have been
expecting a no. I am not expecting you to do anything if you don't want to and
I understand that money is key.
"What will I need
to do?" That is a good question which I cannot answer. I am still at
the stage of finding a musician/band who will work for nothing. However if you
were available I would simply ask you to dance and sing in a similar fashion to
your 'She Walks Right Through Me' video.
"Where would I
stay and for how long?" Well once again I do not know. I only include
these questions so that you have piece of mind in your decision.
"If you don't
know the answer to your own question, why did you bother emailing me?"
I have emailed you as proof to my teacher that I am looking for artists/bands.
You see this email will be put on a blog and left until June where it will be
evaluated and marked.
I hope that you do not see this email as a waste of your
time but for me it is vital. In fact thank you for reading this far. And thank
you for helping me with my coursework just for glancing at this email. As I
said before I don't want you to do anything that you don't want to do and I
understand the fact that I cannot pay you. But thank you either way.
Lots of luck for the future and keeping making videos, you
are an inspiration. Roan Darcy Fryer.

Induction task
In the task I acted in two videos but only edited one.
The first video is one that I am not exactly proud of. In
this video I am Avril Lavigne in the song sk8er boi. To film this video we went
to a skate park on two of the hottest days of the year to film me dancing and
lip syncing to Ms Lavigne. To successfully carry out this adventure me and my
class mates carried out a recce on day one. Armed with a camera and a tripod we
walked the 40 minute journey and partially planned out our filming for the next
day. On day two we walked back with a skilled team of skaters and shot the video.
In an unimpressive manner I cannot say that I learnt anything from this
venture.
The second video is a Bros pastiche. In this video I was the
lead male and in some way the main character. This video was actually made in
about the space of six hours and filmed in two. There is an important lesson
that I have learnt from this; you can never film too much. I say this as when
it came time to edit we quickly ran out of footage and had to re-work old
footage into a tangible form. But we did successfully complete this task. There
are a few tricks to make the video look like it is straight from the early 90’s
which helped us a lot; ie slowing the video down by adjusting the timescale,
including random shots more than once in a way the audience don’t notice, and
using quick cuts to distract them from noticing the random shots they don’t
notice if that makes sense. One final trick was to adjust the brightness to a
higher than normal level, this helps the audience to think that it comes from
the early 90’s.
Alex Clare
This music video is Alex Clare’s “Too Close”. This video is
a representation of life in some form or another. The styling and lack of
colour in this video initiates a sense of a dark, grimy, worthless existence
and the uprising against the faceless entity. The camera plays an important psychological
part when it comes to the styling as well. The slowed actions of the fighters
forces the audience to believe that any actions they have to protect themselves
is futile. The same can be said when the fighters actions are sped up. When the
camera hides behind objects it gives a voyeurism that you may not be there but
you can’t get away, ergo you are still in danger.
Alex Day
This music video is Alex Day’s “She Walks Right Through Me”.
I like this video for so many teenage girl obsession type reasons. Firstly it is the Goodwin link between the
lyrics and the visuals. On a normal music video with this song any director
would have disregarded the literal lyrics and chosen something more symbolic. Whereas
in this video everything is literal. Secondly the styling, everything is portrayed
as dark and dingy as well as depressing. But then the situation changes with
the same dark and dingy aspects to create a whole new situation. A good example
would be Tim Burton’s new film Frankenweenie where the dog dies and is brought
back to life. The film is black and white to add to the creepy nature of the
film and the same can be said for this video. The black and white is there to
add to the creepiness of the situation.
Hank Green
This music video is Hank Green’s “I Don’t Have A Favourite
Pony”.I like this video 1. Because it breaks the fourth wall and 2. It follows
Andrew Goodwin’s rule of illustrating the visuals with the lyrics. Another
factor is that video has been careful thought out when it comes to the camera
work. When for example a ‘pony’ is in the foreground the background has been blurred
out. But of course the ‘ponies’ aren’t really and have been edited in after; thus
the camera has been set up to record Mr Green out of focus so that the ‘ponies’
look like they are really there.
